It is, constantly, highlighted in our society how important self-care is. How many of us follow self-care practices? It’s sad to say that many of us still don’t know how to take care of ourselves first. Often, it’s found that it is perceived as selfish or self-obsessed to be acting upon taking care of ourselves. The fact of the matter is that you can’t DRINK from an empty cup just as much, if not more, than you can’t POUR from an empty cup. So, let’s get it together Femi Girls. It’s time for you to take a minute. 

Here are our 10 Steps to Self-Care:

  1. Meditation 

Yep. We went there. You might believe that this is something that is completely out of your realm of reasoning. That’s okay. Meditation isn’t defined to be something specific. It could be sitting in silence, but it could also be writing in a journal, listening to music, or breathing deeply. There are several apps you can use to get started or you can dive right into it in your own way. Either way, it’s important to take some time to yourself every day to clear your headspace. We are inundated with information and to do lists each day – it’s good to take a step away from it all. 

     2.  Hydration 

Are you drinking enough water? Many say that drinking half of your body weight in ounces is your best line of defense from dehydration. We’re so quick to turn to coffee or soda for energy, but it can quickly dehydrate us making us feel tired or irritable. Making sure that you’re keeping up with your water intake will keep you focused and relaxed throughout the day.

      3. Moisturize

Nothing is more distracting than dry skin. Have you ever been typing on a computer with dry hands? The worst. Find yourself some good skin care and body lotion that will have you looking and feeling your best. Your skin is your largest organ. Make sure you’re taking good care of it. 

      4. Nutrition 

We’re not talking about getting on board with all these fad diets we’re surrounded by. Your health depends on what you’re putting in your body everyday to function properly. If you’re lacking nutrients in your diet, there’s a likely chance that you won’t be able to give 100% each day. So, listen to your mama – eat your veggies, drink your water, calm down the sugar intake, and don’t deprive yourself of the food you want. Everything in moderation, Femi Girl. 

       5. Just say “no” 

Nobody knows why, but it’s so hard for all of us to, collectively, say no to things. Why do we feel so obligated to say no when we KNOW it won’t be helpful to our current situation? So, that’s why this is one of our tips to self-care. Saying “yes” to everything our surroundings ask of us creates a crazy, busy schedule and a lot less energy to put into things that matter. The more you say “yes” to the things that won’t help you grow, the more you will inadvertently say “no” to a better future and, ultimately, a better you.

       6. Taking the walk 

There are days you will have that are overwhelming and irritating. It’s hard to get away from it all, but we can’t always just run away. It’s always a good idea to take a step back and reevaluate for a minute. Take the walk. This is an opportunity to gather your thoughts and ideas so you can better think through what you’re trying to do. So, get out of your head for a minute, take 15 minutes, and take the walk. 

       7. Taking a break, period.

So, once a month, we experience some lovely thing called menstruation. Life doesn’t stop just because we get our periods. However, your body does a lot of funky stuff around this time.        8. Clean your space 

A cluttered space creates a cluttered mind. Your space needs to be the one thing that keeps your vision in mind. Yes, you’re busy. Yes, you’re tired. Honestly, who likes cleaning? Few and far between. It’s just something that needs to be done to keep your headspace clear when everything may be going awry. If you’re willing to take the time to help yourself, this should be a priority. 

       9. You lift, bro? 

Okay so it doesn’t HAVE to be lifting, but exercise is an important aspect to self-care. Whether it’s taking your dog on a walk, lifting weights, going to yoga, heading out on a run, or doing those ab exercises you dread, getting moving is super important to your health & headspace. Exercise releases endorphins which improves your mood and reduces stress. Get moving. 

10. “Me” Time

This is one of the most important aspects of this list. Having “me” time is important when it comes to resetting and finding balance. Schedule it, tell your parents, tell your friends, tell your significant other – make it happen. This is so important to your mental health and your overall well being.
