Often one medication is utilized to treat several different diagnoses and diseases. Birth control pills is one of those instances.
Not only is the pill an effective way to prevent pregnancy, but birth control pills are utilized as a solution for many menstrual related problems. Such problems birth control pills help subside or resolve include; endometriosis, PCOS, acne, irregular or heavy periods, menstrual migraines, and cramps.
What and How It Treats:
Regulating the female’s hormones is the goal when birth control is prescribed for conditions. Primarily estrogen levels. According to Young Womens Health, a hormone imbalance causes irregular menstrual periods, acne, and excess hair growth. Birth control will lower the levels of the excessive hormones the body is producing and bring the levels to normal, thus regulate the issue at hand.
When simple measures, like face washes and diet changes, don’t help acne in girls, birth control pills may be prescribed to lessen the severity of acne.
Lack of periods are caused by a few things. “If the lack of periods are caused by low weight or an eating disorder, the best treatment is weight gain to a normal healthy weight.” as stated by Young Womens Health. Other issues that cause irregular or heavy menses include endometriosis, PCOS and fibroids.
When endometriosis, PCOS or fibroids is the condition, birth control pills are prescribed to suppress the hormones (Young Womens Health). It does not make the condition go away but lessen some of the symptoms like excessive bleeding and severe cramps. The goal is to allow the female to tend to her daily activities without the agony she was in prior to being prescribed.
Menstrual migraines are debilitating to those who get them. Birth control pills are prescribed continuously to lower hormone levels, which cause these debilitating migraines during a female’s period.
The goal of birth control is to allow a female to function when they have an issue that normally interferes with their everyday activities. An imbalance of hormones not only causes the above issues but affects bones from developing and maintenance. Normal estrogen and progesterone levels are vital for healthy bones.
