Toxic Chemicals

Tampons & Pads. Every woman is bound to use some variation of period protection. Yet, you’d be wise to check what is actually in these products before continuing to use them, because studies have found that they contain toxic chemicals.

In an article posted in Environmental International, they sighted the following toxic chemicals that can be found in feminine hygiene products, like tampons & pads. Toxic chemicals should be concerning enough, but combining that with the fact that tampons and pads come into contact with some of the most absorptive, & sensitive skin on our bodies, the cause for concern only amplifies.

The amount of toxins that can be found are vast, but we will name more than enough here:

  • Styrene: carcinogen
  • Chloromethane: reproductive toxicant
  • Chloroethane: carcinogen
  • Chloroform: Carcinogen, reproductive toxicant, neurotoxin
  • Acetone: irritant
  • Superabsorbent Polymers: Sodium Polyacrylate (Increased absorbency, not biodegradable)

This doesn’t even scratch the surface of the list of toxic chemicals you can find in many feminine hygiene products. Even the cotton that is used in tampons, pads, & panty liners is often cotton that was grown with toxic pesticides, and the cotton is often bleached to give it a more clean appearance.

Yet, if you look at the packaging of these items…you’ll find that there isn’t much of this that is disclosed to the public. Why?

Because, since 1980, the US government, & FDA have categorized tampons, & pads as medical devices. Why does that matter? Because, per FDA regulations, medical device products are not required to disclose what goes into the product.

Haunting, right?

This is exactly why Femi Secrets began; To create chemical-free, biodegradable, & disposable period protection products that are safe to use.

Women deserve clean, effective, and safe products! Period.
